You might be asking yourself, "What exactly is business
coaching? Is it the same thing as business consulting? And if
these 'coaches' are so smart, why don't they just get in the game
and run a business of their own?"
All valid questions. Let's address them.
In our opinion, business coaching and business consulting
are two very different things. Whereas business consulting
might provide a solution to a specific issue or problem, business
coaching can be helpful on an ongoing, "big picture"
basis. A business coach will more likely be concerned with changes
to the business as a whole as opposed to just one part of the business.
As far as business coaches being smart and experienced enough to
"get into the game" and run their own business, we couldn't
agree more. On some level, it is true that being a business coach
is running your own business. However, you would probably
agree that it's difficult to accept advice and self-proclaimed expertise
from someone who hasn't previously started, grown, and run a previous
business, preferably with all of the headache and heartache that
goes into having office space, employees, vendors, and a multitude
of customers.
Business coaches with no real experience remind us of freshly minted,
22-year-old college graduates who leave school and go on to do "management
consulting." Sorry, but we just don't buy it.
If you think that you or your business would benefit from a business
coach, you might be right. Give us a chance to learn about you,
your business, your goals, your issues, and so on, and we'll tell
you if we think there's a good fit between us. If there's not, we'll
be very upfront about it, as we enjoy working only on things where
we can succeed and deliver value for the client.
